Music Mixing Secrets

Welcome everyone who is interested about music mixing also recording or furthermore interested about make your own music track. So first let’s see who might want to do this?

Of course everyone who is:

  • loves music and would
  • like to share music taste or
  • beginner who need a direction where to start,
  • looking for music mixing and/or music maker software,
  • music coach, teacher, educator ……you name it!

Let me walk you through step-by-step from the very first step to the very end. This info not only for disc-jockeys who is looking to break in to the music industry in the future, but also those music lovers who just want to make their costume mix. If you want to create professional quality mix and curious about how this magic happens this days, then let me point out a couple of important thing for you!

When we seen folks standing behind the DJ desk playing and mixing songs together it looks so easy to do. For a lot of us so encouraging we just want to jump right in to this business too! Yeah!

Did you ever had a party experience when the “DJ” tried to manage the rhythm from one song into the other to avoid any mistake focusing to follow the tempo and totally “lost in the forest”?   Or others may do it well just couldn’t afford a fine harmonious mix? We would say seems like easy but, these are rare problems for most of the beginners!

Everybody going to face the question sooner or later, if you want to be a pro, eventually must mix the songs together perfectly as possible. OK, but how?

In the past to achieve this goal, usually took the learner a few years to achieve. To adjust two song’s rhythm beat or tempo to the same on two turntables isn’t an easy ride. And I tell you in a past without the right equipment it was almost impossible for years. When the music industry switched over from using records to CD’s the legendary ‘Technics turntable’ had lost their leader position in the disc-jockey industry and taken over by other CD player manufacturer companies. Music mixers still facing the beat matching problem.

With the computer excessively fast evolution the problem seems like solved as well. Actually now you can skip the long time-consuming practicing and be able to use an automatic beat matching music mixer software. With this you’ll produce your own mix without any problems.

I might say, “Would be too good to be true”. Unfortunately many of you found out even you know how to do it, how to use your pro music mixing software, but just won’t happen the perfect way with your songs usually fail. To find the right information and knowledge to mix perfectly like a pro, want to mix or make a track which is suit and meet the music industry high requirements you are on the right site. I’m going to guide you how can you get this information, if you wish coach you and of course I can have the opportunity to share, exchange your experience on this site. Give your opinion, questions and experience about music mixing, music mixer software, and recording! Even make your own music track or song and get other people opinions! Give your comment!

The Art of Music Recording on a Computer

music recording on a computer

In every aspect of music recording on a computer, there are some important rules which must be followed in order to achieve the best possible result. Of course having the necessary equipment, which you also will find further down in this article, is of course vital. The first thing that you need to have properly set up is your computer hardware. It is of utmost importance not to save money when it comes to purchasing hardware to use for this purpose. For the purpose of music and audio recording on a computer based platform you must have a fast processor, as much RAM memory as possible and a fast hard disk with short access time. The audio files should be saved on its own drive, which you will create by making a separate partition for the audio files, or use an external hard disk with sufficient storage capacity. Always make sure to have your computer and all its drives defragmented so the audio files can be found by the system as fast as possible during playback. This will minimize the risk of the sound freezes and/or hacking and other glitches. A very good advice is not to use this particular computer platform to other purposes than audio recording, editing and mastering. Do not use it to surf the Internet or playing games. Let the capacity of the hardware work for the benefit of your audio and music projects. That way you will get absolutely the most out of it.

Things to remember:

·        Make sure you have the highest quality of hardware suitable to your budget (especially RAM and hard disk)

·        Always store your audio files on a separate partition of your hard disk (or on an external hard disk)

·        Keep your computer and its drives defragmented in order for your system to perform a smooth recording and playback of your recorded data

·        Do not use your computer for other purposes than audio recording

Another thing which also is very important, is to use balanced cables in order to avoid any kind of noise. Make sure you use the balanced inputs on your mixer, or sound card input. If you have no balanced inputs on your sound card, you must make sure that the cables are as short as possible in order to prevent too much noise. Since most musical instruments do not carry balanced output connections, you should make use of direct boxes which will create a balanced signal for the input to your sound card.

A lot of high quality software for music and audio recording, editing and mastering on a computer is available in all music retail stores, and nowadays it does not cost a fortune to buy. So the conclusion is first and foremost to focus on building (or buying) a computer which has the necessary capacity regarding audio recording, editing and mastering. The next step is to buy the kind of software you will need and feel comfortable with when using it.

CNC Music Factory – MIDI to gcode

I’m making a note here – *huge success*

First output from ‘mid2cnc.py’, a program to convert MIDI to gcode linear moves, allowing one to play music on a CNC machine (will publish it when it’s done!). The music is Jonathan Coulton’s “Still Alive” from the ending credits of Portal.

Basically, it’s possible to compute a combination of (distance, feedrate) that will cause the stepper motor to spin at an exact frequency corresponding to a musical note. With a little vector magic, the same can be done for (x, y, z, feedrate) to produce chords as the machine follows a 3D line through space.

TODO:
Handle more than 3 notes played at a time (drop some if there are not as many axes…)

Lock notes to their initial axis for their duration (maybe only an issue on my ghetto machine where the axis motors sound very different)

(try to) Improve frequency accuracy where 2 or more notes are played simultaneously (may be a CNC software issue)

A description of how it works is on my blog at http://tim.cexx.org/?p=633

Question about music Mixers?

I’m new to this music stuff, i know i need a Mixer, but i dont have a lot of money, what are the conequenses of getting a cheap one and what exactly do they do? xD

Get one at Radio Shack or Musician’s Friend. You’ll want one with at least 2 cross-faders, preferably 3 or 4 though. That way you can plug in 1 or 2 turntables and 1 or 2 cd players. You may want a usb connection as well for connection of mp3 players. You can get a good mixer for around 100 bucks. Plug it into a ‘reciever’ or ‘amplifier’ (a home surround-sound system should work or if you have a line-in on your computer you can use that). Now play, learn and craft and have fun!
